My approach to counseling is eclectic. To me that means that my ideas concerning human growth and development and my ideas concerning treatment strategies come from a variety of theories and practices. I see my primary counseling purpose as being one of assisting the client to achieve self-defined goals and to overcome problems that interfere with these goals. This process may involve problem solving regarding specific current issues. It may also involve exploring past experiences to help understand how they have impacted personality development and/or habitual response patterns.
My overall view of human development is based in interpersonal neurobiology, a theoretical framework developed by Daniel Siegel MD. I have studied with him on numerous occasions. My theoretical approach is based in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), developed by Francine Shapiro PhD. This approach looks at human experience in terms of adaptive information processing. For whatever reason, if that has not been possible, strategies to address those challenges are developed in the relationship between the therapist and the client and in the context of the framework defined by EMDR. I have completed both the Level I and Level II trainings and encourage the use of this protocol as appropriate. A further application of this tool beyond therapy is as a method to maximize performance enhancement in order to assist clients to reach their potential. I am certified in EMDR through the EMDR International Association.
Other therapeutic modalities have grown from the EMDR approach, among which are the Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy (DNMS), Lifespan Integration (LI), and Brainspotting—I have been trained to varying degrees in all of these modalities as well as in other more body-based approaches. Furthermore my interest in mind/body integration led me to become a certified instructor and trainer of Ai Chi (moving meditation in warm water). This certification is from the Aquatic Therapy & Rehabilitation Institute (ATRI). When appropriate I encourage clients to learn and participate in this process. This can be done individually or in a group setting.
